Your National Anthem?

If you could choose the United States of America's national anthem, what song would you choose? Why would you choose that song?

I'd love to hear your choice. Any song from any genre is appropriate as long as it is thoughtfully selected to represent the United States.

I chose Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come. I've chosen this song because it represents the spirit of American optimism in the face of harsh realities. The colonial soldiers had this spirit when they gained this nation's independence. The writers of the constitution had this spirit when they wrote the document that was meant to last us into eternity. Black Americans had this spirit when first, they envisioned freedom from the doldrums of slavery, and then again when they fought to take down Jim Crow. Women had this spirit when they garnered the right to vote and Amerindians had this spirit when their land was swept away from them under their feet. This is the American spirit, the belief in a brighter day, especially when the night is its bleakest.

After careful consideration, I would choose "God Bless America" as our national anthem. In past years,I used to feel so proud to be an American. Everytime I would hear that song I would feel my heart swell with pride and I would become tearful because I was so deeply moved. I felt as though this country was truly a land of opportunity and that I could achieve anything I dreamed of if I worked hard. In reality, things are a little different in our country today. I would love to "stand beside her and guide her" but I believe that at present no one in our government would listen to my guidance. I am always hopeful for a better day when I can once again hear "God Bless America and feel true pride in my country.
